The first of 3 squash games -thanks to Luca Wilhelmi and Patrick Maier.
Both players were in the top 25 in the Swiss squash ranking at the time of filming.
Brief squash rules:
- Server must must have at least one foot in small square, hit the ball above midline on front wall into opposite side large square
- Each player returns the ball before it bounces a second time on ground. Return shot must hit front wall before hitting ground, but may hit side walls or the back wall at any time
- If a player can’t return ball before it bounces on ground twice, or hits it out of bounds (below the lowest front red line, or above the highest red line) he loses the point
- Whoever wins the point has next service
- First player to lead by 2 points AND get at least 11 points wins the game
- First player to win 3 games wins the match
- A “let” (replay of a rally) is played if a player substantially blocks the opponent’s path to the ball. A “stroke” (point) is awarded if a player directly blocks the line of return of his own shot or obstructs his opponent when he’s in a winning position. Decisions are made by a referee.
Here, the referee’s job was easy, because the players played very fairly, clearing the path for the opponent, and working around any minor obstruction.
