📍 About the Landscape
Soar above the vast expanse of the Alvord Playa, a dry lakebed roughly 8 miles wide and 70 miles long that was once part of an ancient lake during the last Ice Age more than 10,000 years ago. Seasonal rains can briefly flood the playa, transforming the surface into a shallow mirror that reflects the sky and surrounding mountains. When dry, the cracked earth stretches endlessly toward the horizon.

📜 Historical Notes
The desert is named after General Benjamin Alvord, a Civil War era commander of the Department of Oregon. Later, the open playa became known for land speed attempts thanks to its hard, flat surface. In 1976, Kitty O’Neil set a women’s land speed record here, followed decades later by Jessi Combs pushing the limits again on the same desert floor.
