"Stop here, at the gateway to the first Christian cemetery. This is one of a pair of Gothic gates that have kept guard over the cemetery since 1846. At the time of construction, one gate was facing the sea, and the other faced inland. The letters on the front, IHS, stand for Iota Heta Sigma. Those are the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus. The designer, Captain Charles Edward Faber, was the Colony’s Superintending Engineer. And he was definitely not Greek. Unfortunately, he was definitely not a star architect either. Most of his engineering constructions tumbled down over time. It’s a good thing these two withstood the test of time. Today they are iconic of Fort Canning Park. Let's walk through the gate now. As you enter, turn right and take a look at the headstones in the boundary wall. You can take a closer look at them if you like.
The stately, sprawling building at the top of the hill is the Singapore Pinacothèque de Paris, the first expansion outside Europe by this international private museum. When you're ready, return to the central brick path that leads you from the first Gothic gate to our second."
