Japan Matsukawa Lantern Festival 5 Neighborhood
This is the Matsukawa Lantern Festival, held in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. Originally, the festival involved 13 districts and 13 floats; however, due to traffic restrictions that made it difficult for residents to move around, it is now held in two separate groups comprising seven districts and five districts, respectively.
Unlike festivals in the Kanto region, this event is not overrun by crowds of tourists. The route is lined with private homes, vegetable patches, and rice fields, and the area becomes pitch-black at night.
You may notice the floats collapsing structures that resemble antennas; this is done to clear obstacles such as power lines, cables, and road signs.
Please enjoy the magical atmosphere created by this lantern festival.
The final shot shows an "Ultraseven" figure inside a vending machine at a nearby highway service area. Since Eiji Tsuburaya—known as the "God of Tokusatsu" (special effects)—hailed from Sukagawa City in Fukushima Prefecture, statues like this can be found throughout the region.
