We begin our walk at the Reichstag, the seat of the German parliament. This 19th-century witness to history survived the 1933 fire and the bombings of World War II. Look up at the top—Norman Foster’s modern glass dome was built after the country’s reunification; its transparency symbolizes the fact that citizens can keep a close watch on politicians. Leaving the dull sidewalk behind, we turn into the paths of Tiergarten Park. Looming ahead is the Soviet War Memorial, erected in 1945. Flanking the colonnade are authentic T-34 tanks and artillery pieces that took part in the capture of Berlin. Interestingly, during the Cold War, the memorial stood within the British sector, yet it was guarded by East Berlin soldiers right up to the very end. As we leave the park, the Brandenburg Gate rises up before us. It is over 230 years old and was modeled after the Acropolis in Athens. Crowning the structure is the Quadriga—a sculpture of the goddess of victory that Napoleon so admired he had it carted off to Paris! During the Cold War, the gate stood in the middle of the Berlin Wall’s "death strip." Once a symbol of Europe’s division, it now welcomes us to the bustling Pariser Platz as a global icon of freedom.
