Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, is a scenic hill station in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri Mountains, originally inhabited by the Toda tribes and developed by the British as a summer retreat starting in 1819 when John Sullivan, Coimbatore's collector, established roads and a residence there.
