The Ananuri Fortress is located in Georgia, on the Georgian Military Road, 70 km from Tbilisi. The fortress dates back to the 16th century and, over the next two centuries, served as the northern outpost defending Transcaucasia, blocking the road leading from the Darial Gorge.
On the citadel’s territory, there is a tower with a pyramidal roof that existed even before the fortress was built, the Gvtaeba church‑mausoleum of the local eristavis (16th–17th centuries), and the Church of the Dormition (1689). Traces of a pool and a bathhouse have been preserved.
In the lower fortification, only the single‑nave Mqurnali Church (16th–17th centuries) with a bell tower has survived. The Ananuri Fortress has been proposed by the Georgian government for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
