Banská Štiavnica is a remarkably well-preserved medieval town in central Slovakia, set entirely within an ancient collapsed caldera (volcano). Celebrated for its rich silver mining history and striking architecture, the entire town center and its surrounding industrial monuments were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Key Highlights & Attractions Silver Mining Heritage: During the Middle Ages and early modern era, Banská Štiavnica was one of Europe's top producers of silver and gold. In 1627, gunpowder was used in its mines for civil engineering purposes for the first time in history. The Old and New Castles: The Old Castle (Starý zámok), originally a 13th-century church converted into a fortress against Ottoman invasion, overlooks the town alongside the prominent New Castle (Nový zámok). The Calvary: Perched atop a volcanic hill, this Baroque complex of chapels and churches offers panoramic views across the caldera. Tajchy Reservoirs: An intricate 18th-century system of artificial lakes connected by underground canals was built to power mining pumps.
