From Leo AI: Doctor & The Medics released their cover of "Spirit in the Sky" in April 1986, produced by Craig Leon and released on I.R.S. Records. This glam rock and neo-psychedelic version of Norman Greenbaum’s 1969 hit reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks and No. 1 in Canada, where it was certified platinum. The single was also certified silver in the UK and peaked at No. 2 in New Zealand and No. 69 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The track features lead vocals by Clive Jackson (known as "The Doctor") and includes the B-side "Laughing at the Pieces." While critically divisive for its synthesized production, the song became a major commercial success and helped define the band's identity as a theatrical, glam-inspired act. It remains one of the most recognizable cover versions of the song, preceding Gareth Gates’ 2003 charity single.
