The concept of immortality, emerging in the late Zhou Dynasty and flourishing during the Qin and Han eras, profoundly shaped Chinese imperial garden design. The pursuit of mystical realms like the East China Sea and Kunlun Mountain led to the "one pool, three mountains" architectural paradigm, which dominated imperial garden planning through the Qing Dynasty.

Fanghu Shengjing, established in 1738 within the Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace), stands as the pinnacle of this tradition. Covering 20,000 square meters, this magnificent complex features three double-eaved pavilions extending into the lake, backed by nine pavilions housing over 2,000 Buddha statues and 30 pagodas. Its symmetrical, temple-like architecture perfectly captures the mythical "fairy mountain" aesthetic, complemented by the adjacent "Three Pools Mirroring the Moon" scene.
