Agra was the heart of the Mughal empire, and its great sites tell one family's story. Akbar rebuilt Agra Fort in red sandstone between 1565 and 1573, then raised an entire new capital at Fatehpur Sikri, crowned by the Buland Darwaza, the "Gate of Magnificence" — only for the court to leave it within fifteen years. His grandson Shah Jahan filled the fort with white-marble palaces and built the Taj Mahal downriver. In 1658 Shah Jahan's own son Aurangzeb confined him in the fort, where he spent his last eight years looking out towards the Taj. Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In 360°, fly over the red ramparts of Agra Fort, walk its gardens and courtyards, and stand in the white-marble Musamman Burj where Shah Jahan spent his final days. Then travel to Fatehpur Sikri: rise above the Buland Darwaza and the Jama Masjid, and stand in the palace courtyard beside the five-storey Panch Mahal. End across the Yamuna in the Mehtab Bagh, where the Taj Mahal rises above the trees on the far bank.
