irby Hall is a spectacular, Grade I listed Elizabethan country house near Corby, Northamptonshire, managed by English Heritage. Started in 1570, it was later bought and dramatically expanded by Sir Christopher Hatton, a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. It stands as one of England's great "prodigy houses," built to showcase immense wealth and status.

Today, much of the vast mansion is a dramatic, picturesque ruin, though the Great Hall and lavish State Rooms remain impressively intact. The architecture is a remarkable blend of Renaissance and Classical styles, with features like its inner courtyard being extremely early for English houses.

Visitors can explore the magnificent, recently restored 17th-century formal gardens, famous for their elaborate 'cutwork' design, and follow the story of its rise and eventual decline. Kirby Hall has hosted royalty, including King James I multiple times, and has been a filming location for period dramas like Mansfield Park. Keep an eye out for the friendly peacocks that roam the grounds!
