"I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery." Countless Buddhist scriptures begin with those words. Shravasti — Savatthi — was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Kosala, and the Buddha spent more rainy seasons here than anywhere else: twenty-five in all, nineteen of them in the Jetavana grove. The merchant Anathapindika bought it for him, the story goes, by covering the ground in gold coins.
