Hubbard Glacier, Alaska | Ship Ride into the Ice VR180

The bay turns turquoise, then the ice wall takes the whole view.
This is a ship excursion into Disenchantment Bay, toward Hubbard Glacier in Alaska. You ride the boat, not a trail. A guide on the audio talks you in from the dock, past coastal forest, toward a tidewater face more than six miles wide. You look around in the headset as the ship closes in. The water is cloudy with glacial flour. The guide covers the Galloping Glacier, the 1986 and 2002 dams at Russell Fjord, and ice that takes about 400 years to reach the face. Blue in the cliff is compressed ice, not a reflection of the sky. Calving is the white thunder. Crew net old ice for guests to hold. On the way out, Steller sea lions haul out on the rocks.
Shot on a Canon VR180 as side-by-side 3D. Play it in a headset that reads SBS. Nobody steps onto the ice.
