It’s 5:41 a.m. in the Arizona desert, just before sunrise. The ground underfoot is muddy from last night's monsoon storms. It was a chancy thing getting here with low points on AZ highway 238 sandy from flash flooding.

Stand trackside with me as Amtrak 310 approaches through the darkness and rounds Shawmut Curve on the Sunset Route.

This is why I enjoy VR180 rail photography. You’re not limited to where I decided to point a conventional camera. Look toward the approaching headlights, follow the train through the curve, or turn your attention to the desert around you. For a few minutes, you’re there waiting with me.
