On the Mediterranean coast, just a few minutes’ drive from Barcelona, stands an ancient and majestic structure—Castell de Fells—which stands quietly atop a 59-metre-high hill. It is not only the symbolic heart of the town of Castelldefels, but also an unbeatable vantage point overlooking the Costa Garraf and the Llobregat Delta.
The castle’s history reads like a weighty tome. As far back as the pre-Christian era, the Iberians settled here, leaving traces of their lives. Later, the Romans also left their mark on this land. By the 10th century, to ward off external threats, a church and a tower were built upon the ancient Roman ruins. Over the following centuries, it served as a military stronghold guarding the territory; particularly in the 16th century, to counter the frequent raids by North African pirates, the castle underwent extensive fortification, with every reddish-brown stone bearing witness to that smoke-filled era of defence.
By the late 19th century, the castle had fallen into disrepair. It was not until 1897 that the banker Manuel Girona commissioned the renowned architect Enric Saguer to undertake a major restoration. Today, the castle is a perfect fusion of styles from different eras: the rustic Romanesque chapel, the imposing Gothic gate, and the red stone added during the later restoration all lend it a warm and distinctive appearance.
