The obelisk currently standing in St. peter's Square has had a long history. It was first constructed in Heliopolis, Egypt and then moved to Alexandria by Emperor Augustus. Decades later, Emperor Caligula moved the obelisk by ship all the way to Rome, where it was placed in the Circus of Nero, which eventually became part of the Old St Peter's Basilica. With the destruction of the Basilica, the last traces of Nero's Circus were removed, with only the Obelisk standing as the lasting reminder of where it sat for 1400 years. With the construction of the new St Peter's Basilica and by order of Pope Sixtus V, the obelisk once again was moved around 800 feet from its original placement in Nero's Circus, where it has remained ever since in what is now St Peter's Square. The obelisk is around 84 feet tall and weighs around 331 tons. The entire monument, base and cross included stand around 135 feet high. In its near 2,000 year history, it has never toppled and is currently the second largest obelisk in Rome.
