Kucha, also spelled Kuqa, is an ancient oasis city in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of western China. Located on the northern rim of the Taklamakan Desert and at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, it was a vital hub on the northern branch of the Silk Road. Known for its rich history as a Buddhist kingdom, Kucha is home to the famous Kizil Caves, which contain some of the earliest Buddhist murals in China.
