The Puente Zubizuri (Basque for "White Bridge") is one of Bilbao's most recognizable pedestrian bridges and a defining piece of modern architecture in the Basque Country. Designed by the world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, it was inaugurated in 1997, the same year as the nearby Guggenheim Museum. Officially named the Puente del Campo de Volantín, the bridge spans the Nervión River, connecting the Campo de Volantín and Uribitarte neighborhoods. Its unique design features an elegantly curved, inclined steel arch from which the walking platform is suspended by slender cables.
