Soar above the surreal geothermal landscape of Mickey Hot Springs at the northern edge of Oregon’s Alvord Desert. Steam vents, bubbling mud pots, and mineral rich pools reveal an active geothermal system tied to deep faults beneath Steens Mountain. Heat rising from far below pushes water to the surface, creating near boiling springs and vivid mineral colors that stain the earth, a living reminder of the volcanic forces that shaped this high desert basin.

Long before modern roads, the Northern Paiute people, including today’s Burns Paiute Tribe, traveled and lived across these valleys and uplands. They hunted, gathered, and moved seasonally through the Steens Mountain region, maintaining a deep connection to this land and its thermal waters for thousands of years.
