Built in 1732, by Peshwa Baji Rao the first, Shaniwar wada was the grand 7 story capitol building of the Peshwas of the Maratha empire and housed nearly a thousand people at one point of time. Unfortunately, the fort was destroyed by a fire in 1828 and all that remains are the base structures made of stone and the surrounding granite ramparts and gateways.
