On 18 March 1965, Alexei Leonov became the first human ever to perform an extravehicular activity (EVA). During the mission, he floated outside the spacecraft for several minutes, opening a new era in space exploration. The achievement was extraordinary, but also extremely dangerous: in the vacuum of space, his suit expanded and made re-entry through the airlock very difficult. Leonov nevertheless managed to return safely, securing his place in world history.
