In 1637, the second lord of the Sendai domain, Date Tadamune, founded Koka-in when the mausoleum of the domain's founder, Date Masamune, "Zuihoden" was constructed.
The Sendai domain granted it the status of a temple, and it had many branch temples in Kyogamine, but due to the anti-Buddhist and anti-Shrine sentiment during the Meiji Restoration and the loss of domain backing when the domains were abolished and prefectures were established, all of the temples were abandoned, but were restored in 1926.
