Portela warms up the bateria and the sambódromo during their Setor 11 rehearsal last January.

Portela is one of the oldest samba schools still existing, and has won carnaval more times than any other school! This is Mestre Vitinho's first year as Mestre da Bateria at Portela, although in the past he has been at neighboring Império Serrano and Maricá. Tabajara do Samba is known for playing caixa embaixo patterns.

With accents and swing, of course.

Pay attention to how Portela's repiques and caixas play Virada 2. They buzz on the "e" of 4 coming back into the groove. Don't confuse this to how Imperatriz Leopoldinense caixas and repiques buzz on the "e" of 1 coming back into the groove on a Virada 2.
