Sayama Ike, also known as Sayama Pond, is one of the oldest man-made reservoirs in Japan, located in Ōsakasayama City, Osaka Prefecture. It has a rich history and cultural significance, dating back over 1,400 years.
This pond was constructed in the 7th century during the Asuka period (538–710 AD). It was built to support agricultural irrigation in the region, showcasing the advanced engineering skills of the time.
The primary purpose of the pond was to store water for irrigation, helping to cultivate rice paddies and sustain local agriculture. The pond covers an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers and has a capacity of about 2.8 million cubic meters of water.
This pond is mentioned in ancient Japanese texts, including the *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan), one of the oldest historical records of Japan.
Sayama Ike Museum: A museum dedicated to the pond's history and its role in regional development is located nearby. It showcases artifacts, historical documents, and models explaining the pond's construction and significance. The museum was designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando and opened in 2001.
