Travel with me and experience the highlights of the 2024 Nguon Festival in Foumban, Cameroon.
Nguon is the biannual festival of the Bamoun people. At the center of this multi-day gathering is the public trial of the King (Mfon), where citizens of the nation air grievances and voice cliques about how the kingdom is being governed. Bamoun Kings have been known to be issued fines and can also be dethroned if their public deems them unfit to continue in a rulership position.
The festival is capped off by a massive war masquerade where the entire city celebrates the strong warrior spirit that is a central part of Bamoun Culture. Past war victories are re-enacted in order to settle the warrior spirit within the people so that they may have peace in the days that follow.
