The Daijō-kyū is a simple, temporary palace constructed for the Daijō-sai, an important imperial ritual held after the Emperor's accession. Unlike the Grand Shrine, it is not permanent. It is customary to dismantle and burn it (perform the ritual burning) immediately after the Daijōsai concludes. Its simple construction, featuring black timber (using logs with bark intact) and a thatched roof, mimics the form of ancient shrines.
