Pichavaram Mangrove Forest, Tamil Nadu, India | 8K 360° VR | By Boat Through the Mangrove Maze

Between the mouths of the Vellar and Coleroon rivers lies a maze of 51 mangrove islets, threaded by tidal channels. Pichavaram has been a protected reserve forest since 1893, and in 2022 it was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Among its fourteen mangrove species is a rare natural hybrid. The trees here once gave the nearby temple town of Chidambaram its old name, Thillai — after the tillai mangrove that still grows along these waters.

In 360°, sit in the bow of a small boat as it slips off the open backwater into narrow channels, where stilt roots arch over the water on both sides and the light turns green. Rise above the forest to see the channels threading through it from the air, cross the wide lagoon with the sun on the water, and come out onto the sandbar where the backwaters meet the Bay of Bengal.
