Xuefeng Chongsheng Temple, located at the southern foot of Xuefeng Mountain in Dahu Township, Minhou County, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, is the birthplace of the Yunmen and Fayan sects of Buddhist Zen and one of the key Buddhist temples in Han areas.
Historical Evolution
Xuefeng Temple was first built in 870, the 11th year of Xiantong in the Tang Dynasty, with the eminent monk Yicun as its founding master. In 875, the second year of Qianfu in the Tang Dynasty, Wei Gongxiu, the observer of Fujian, donated 300 strings of cash for its construction and named it "Yingtian Xuefeng Temple". In 900, the third year of Guanghua in Emperor Zhaozong of the Tang Dynasty, it was renamed "Yingtian Guangfu Temple". In 978, the third year of Taiping Xingguo in the Song Dynasty, it was named "Xuefeng Chongsheng Temple", which has been used ever since.
