Fanpo Building, located in Gulangyu, Xiamen City, Fujian Province, is a historic building with a Nanyang style. The puppet show here is a distinctive traditional folk art in the local area, and the combination of the two shows the unique charm of Minnan culture to tourists.
The puppet shows at Fanpo Building are mostly based on traditional Minnan opera stories, such as Chen San and Wu Niang and The Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea. Through the vivid performances of the puppets, the classic plots are reproduced. The puppets are exquisitely shaped with gorgeous costumes and meticulous facial carvings. Puppets of different roles (male, female, painted-face, clown) have their own characteristics, which can accurately convey the characters' personalities and emotions.
During the performance, the artists manipulate the puppets behind the scenes. With skillful techniques, the puppets make a series of lifelike movements such as walking, turning around, waving, and dancing. At the same time, they are accompanied by Minnan dialect lyrics and musical accompaniment, making the whole performance lively, interesting and appealing. The puppet show at Fanpo Building is not only an artistic performance, but also an important carrier of the history, culture and folk customs of the Minnan region, attracting many tourists to watch and experience the unique charm of traditional art.
