The earliest recorded shadow play appeared in the Song Dynasty. Typically, cowhide was first processed to be semi-transparent before being carved and colored. Performers manipulate the colored shadow figures behind the scenes, and through the illumination of lights, the shadows of these figures are projected through the shadow window to the audience, telling stories scene by scene.
