The enshrined deity is Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto. In 1185, Minamoto no Yoritomo donated the sacred grounds to the shrine as a place of prayer, and the shrine was founded at its current location by the monk Shunjo. Uchio Shrine is said to have originated in 702, when the monk Hodo enshrined Kasuga Daimyojin, Jizo Gongen, Hachimangu Shrine, Tenjin, and Benzaiten at a lodging house for mountain ascetics built on Mihara Okutanji Daito Peak, and performed a thousand-day ascetic practice there. The straight approach and the sacred 60-meter cedar tree are a sight to behold!
