The municipality has 37,248 inhabitants. Schaffhausen is the capital of the canton of the same name.
On January 1, 2009, the municipality of Hemmental was incorporated into Schaffhausen.
The municipality consists of the city of Schaffhausen and the towns of Herblingen and Hemmental.
