Sukhothai is an ancient city in north-central Thailand, established around 1238 CE as the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom—the first independent Thai kingdom—by King Si Inthrathit after breaking away from the Khmer Empire, flourishing under Ramkhaeng the Great (r. 1279–1298) who created the Thai script and expanded trade.
