Japan Sendai Mutsu Kokubunji Temple

It was founded in the 740s during the Nara period as one of the provincial temples built at the request of Emperor Shomu. It maintained its large structure with financial support from Mutsu Province until the Heian period, but fell into significant decline during the Muromachi period. It was rebuilt by Date Masamune in the early 17th century and flourished as a large temple with 25 halls, centered around Yakushido Hall, which was built in 1607.
Yakushido Hall is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, the ruins of the ancient temple are designated as a national historic site, and the area around the temple grounds are designated as a national place of scenic beauty.
