Route Overview
Starting from Kangding and heading east along National Highway 318 to Luding, this approximately 50-kilometer journey takes around 1.5 hours by car. The route traverses the transitional zone between the western Sichuan plateau and the canyon regions, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, rushing rivers, and Tibetan villages. It is one of the most iconic sections of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway.
Highlights Along the Way
Kangding – The Starting PointThe journey begins in Kangding (elevation 2,560 meters), the "City of Love Songs," where the roaring waters of the Zheduo River set the tone for the trip. From the city, you can glimpse Mount Guoda in the distance. It’s recommended to stock up on supplies before departure.
Wagou CanyonAfter leaving Kangding, the road enters the Wagou Canyon section, hugging a tributary of the Dadu River. Towering cliffs line both sides of the road, with cascading waterfalls in summer and glittering ice formations in winter, earning it the nickname "Geological Corridor."
Ridi Tibetan VillagePassing through traditional Jiarong Tibetan villages, you’ll see colorful prayer flags and ancient watchtower-style architecture. In autumn, locals often sell highland apples by the roadside.
