DeoVR at CES 2024: the future of VR and spatial computing
CES 2024 showcased incredible new ideas about virtual and augmented reality, including new products from Canon and Sony, passthrough live streaming, and exciting developments in haptics and healthcare. Watch DeoVR at CES in 8K VR180 for news about DeoVR's huge plans for 2024 from our CEO.
Canon’s new VR products
Canon showcased three exciting new products that will open up the world of VR and spatial computing to a much greater audience. This includes two new lenses and the long-awaited consumer 360/180 camera. See our full article for more details.
Xreal AR Glasses
These Air 2 Ultra glasses ($699) look and feel just like regular stylish RayBans, but run a huge range of augmented reality apps, as well as working as a screen for a computer or mobile device. When they support OpenXR, DeoVR can be ported over easily meaning users will be able to enjoy the vast DeoVR library wherever they are.
Passthrough Live streaming
We found an interesting company called LOTTE - Caliverse that is doing passthrough live streaming. The set-up consists of a chroma background, two cameras and special software which allows users to actually interact with the objects. It has huge potential for virtual stores with personalized content.
The growth of haptics
Haptic technology is becoming hugely popular and examples of this technology were everywhere. For example, the winner of the CES 2024 Innovation Award was Phantom, a mobile and universal haptic glove that creates artificial touch sensations for tactile feedback.
Sony XR headset
Sony debuted their high-end XR headset for spatial content creation. Rather than gaming or consumers, it is geared towazrds 3D content creators and engineers and features Qualcomm's new Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 processor, and an 8K display using 4K OLED micro displays for each eye. It also includes a pair of wearable controllers and the front panel flips up and down so you users can leave the virtual space without removing the headset. We will cover this device in more detail soon.
Healthcare and VR
Japan and South Korea, in particular, are using VR and haptics for all kinds of medical purposes, from virtual pain management to surgery simulations. In particular, XRHealth’s VR platform looks to revolutionize digital health by offering immersive experiences for various therapeutic applications.
The influence of Apple
Apple wasn’t at CES 2024 but the Vision Pro is already having a major impact. The world of immersive content has been rebranded into spatial computing, encompassing VR, AR and mixed-reality. Pre-orders for the Vision Pro have sold out and while the initial orders were limited to around 70,000, it is expected to have a huge influence on immersive technology in the coming months and years. We are working hard to ensure DeoVR works - both native and through WebXR in the Safari browser.
