Japan Shiogama Shrine Hote Festival Part 1

The highlight of the Shiogama Shrine Hote Festival is the sight of 16 people carrying a one-ton portable shrine down the steep 202 steps of the main approach to the shrine, and the procession of over 500 glittering attendants and children through the city.
The festival originally began as a New Year's portable shrine washing ritual, and as a fire prevention festival. It is a traditional festival that has been held since 1733 (the 18th year of the Kyoho era).
Just like at a shrine, everyone offers prayers to the mikoshi and gives offerings.
