Varna is Bulgaria's third-largest city and primary Black Sea port, founded as the ancient Greek colony of Odessos in the 6th century BCE by Milesian settlers on the site of prehistoric settlements including the Chalcolithic Varna Necropolis with the world's oldest worked gold, later thriving under Roman, Bulgarian, Byzantine, and Ottoman rule before liberation in 1878.
