High Above San Sebastián: Castillo de La Mota & The Sacred Heart Statue on Mount Urgull
Standing high above the Bay of La Concha, Mount Urgull (Monte Urgull) forms one of the most historical natural landmarks in Donostia-San Sebastián, Basque Country. At its peak sits the Castillo de La Mota, a fortress originally established in the 12th century that played a crucial role in defending the city against centuries of military sieges and naval attacks. Atop the fortress ruins stands the monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Sagrado Corazón). Designed by sculptor Federico Coullaut-Valera and architect Pedro Muguruza, the statue was erected in 1950 and stands over 12 meters tall (over 28 meters including its base), overlooking the city and the Bay of Biscay.
