Introduction to Huihe Shadow Carving, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage
Huihe Shadow Carving is a national-level intangible cultural heritage of China, originating in Xiamen, Fujian Province. Its history dates back to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, making it a unique traditional carving technique in the Minnan region.
Using black bluestone as the carrier, craftsmen use specially made fine steel needles to repeatedly chisel the stone surface according to the design. Through tens of thousands to millions of punctures, they create light and dark contrasts by varying the density and depth of the needle points, ultimately presenting works that combine the texture of painting with the three-dimensional sense of carving. The themes include landscapes, figures, flowers and birds, historical allusions, etc., which not only retain the artistic conception of traditional calligraphy and painting but also allow the works to be preserved for a long time due to the durability of the stone.
As an important carrier of Minnan culture, Huihe Shadow Carving is not only an inheritance of skills but also embodies the folk craftsmen's pursuit of ultimate details. Today, this technique continues to innovate in inheritance, integrating modern design elements, becoming a cultural symbol connecting the past and the present, and allowing traditional stone carving art to glow with new vitality in the contemporary era.
