Haedong Yonggungsa is a rare coastal temple located along the rocky shores of Busan, South Korea — one of the few Buddhist temples in the country built beside the sea rather than in the mountains.

Founded in the 14th century during the Goryeo Dynasty, the temple is dramatically set against crashing waves and endless ocean views. Stone steps lead visitors downward from the entrance gate toward the main prayer halls, revealing layered perspectives of architecture and coastline.

Unlike mountain temples that emphasize seclusion, Haedong Yonggungsa feels expansive and open. The sound of the sea becomes part of the spiritual atmosphere, blending natural rhythm with temple rituals.

At sunrise, the horizon glows in soft gold, illuminating the temple rooftops and statues. The interplay between ocean, sky, and traditional architecture creates one of Korea’s most cinematic religious landscapes.

More than a tourist attraction, Haedong Yonggungsa represents harmony between faith and nature — a place where prayer meets the tide.

Whether you visit for spiritual reflection, photography, or simply to witness a temple unlike any other, Haedong Yonggungsa offers a coastal experience that feels both sacred and breathtaking.
