Fan Po Mansion: A Centenarian Villa Worth 400 Million
Fan Po Mansion on Gulangyu Island is a splendid specimen of Minnan overseas Chinese architecture, and has become a legend due to its rumored valuation of "400 million yuan". Built in 1927 by Philippine Chinese overseas Chinese Xu Jingquan to honor his mother, "Fan Po" is a Minnan term of respect for elderly women living abroad, embodying filial piety in every character.
The building integrates Nanyang arcade, Baroque reliefs and Minnan red brick elements. Its columns are wrapped with grape patterns, window lattices inlaid with stained glass, and century-old banyan trees shade the vermilion gates, as if time has solidified into poetry between bricks and stones. Now stripped of its residential function, it stands as a living fossil of Gulangyu's "World Architecture Expo", with every brick and tile engraving the patriotic feelings of overseas Chinese merchants and the trends of the era. Behind the 400 million valuation lies the irreplaceable scarcity of cultural heritage, and the eternal price tag of the Minnan spirit of "remembering one's roots".
