Japan Akita Hanawa Bayashi (UNESCO)
The Hanawa-bayashi festival, held in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture, features musical performances dedicated to Saiwai Inari Shrine—the local guardian deity of Hanawa.
It is a spectacular event in which ten lavishly decorated floats parade through the town all night long, accompanied by spirited musical performances from the young participants.
Said to date back to the late Heian period, it is counted among the "Three Great *Bayashi* (Festival Music) Festivals of Japan."
It is designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
Aside from time spent eating and sleeping, participants spend the entire day parading through their assigned districts. Afterward, they gather in front of Hanawa Station to perform for one another.
This video captures the scene as the performers return to the shrine after their set.
The final ritual, known as "Sansa," took place after midnight.
