BARS 501 was a typical military communication station used mainly during the Cold War period in former Czechoslovakia and the Soviet bloc. Such stations were used for military radio communication, encrypted links between command centers and units, or for the army’s warning and control systems.

They were often fixed or semi-fixed stations with large antennas and technology that allowed long-distance communication, sometimes even across countries. Some of them also had underground sections and special rooms for technicians and operators.
