Hidden in Huaxi Valley of Changtian Stream on Fuzhou’s Guling Mountain lies the most charming hydrangea sea in Fuzhou’s summer. Covering 15 mu of terraced flower fields, the garden is home to nearly 110,000 hydrangeas, which reach full bloom around the Dragon Boat Festival, making it a famous scenic spot for summer escape and flower appreciation. Standing over 700 meters above sea level, Guling is wrapped in mist all year round, with temperatures 5 to 6 degrees lower than downtown. The mild, humid valley climate perfectly suits hydrangeas, nurturing endless waves of colorful blossoms.
A wide range of varieties, including Endless Summer, Miss Saori and Ruby, grow in mixed single and double-petal clusters. Known as “color chameleons”, hydrangeas turn clear sea blue in acidic soil and soft blush pink in alkaline soil. One single bush may bear purple, white and gradient blooms at once, creating a dreamlike view. Wooden boardwinds wind along terraces, a red arch bridge spans clear brooks, and a vintage water wheel rests on the hillside. Mountain breezes sway round flower clusters, carrying the fresh scent of plants and streams.
When mist shrouds the valley, the whole sea of flowers resembles an oil painting by Monet. Over a century ago, foreign summer residents planted hydrangeas around their mountain villas. The blooming flowers complement
