Kyoto: Ninna-ji Temple, founded in 888, Japan
Ninna-ji Temple (Head Temple of the Omuro School of Shingon Buddhism)
Founded in 886 (Ninna 2) by imperial decree of Emperor Koko, and completed in 888 (Ninna 4).
The temple's name is derived from the era name. Emperor Uda shaved his head and entered the temple, establishing an Omuro (imperial residence) within the temple grounds, and it was also known as the Omuro Imperial Palace.
Thereafter, until the Meiji Restoration, successive imperial princes and grandsons served as abbots, making it the foremost of the monzeki temples (temples headed by imperial princes).
Many of the temple buildings were destroyed in the Onin War (1467-77), and rebuilt during the Kan'ei and Shoho periods (1624-48).
In December 1994 (Heisei 6), it was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site under the "World Heritage Convention" as part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto."
