By tradition, Bishop Klemens of Wrocław gave Holy Cross Cathedral a relic of the Holy Cross in 1024, and half a cross was then added to the eagle on Opole's coat of arms. The cathedral is red brick with twin spires. In 1933 a rebuild gave Most Piastowski's forerunner, the Jahrhundertbrücke, a steel structure in place of its many old spans, as another bridge nearby opened.
