Malmöfestivalen is a recurring festival in Malmö in August every year. The festival was started in 1985 and is a predecessor and inspiration for the Stockholm Water Festival and the Gothenburg Festival. About 1.4 million people visit it every year. Many famous artists have performed at the festival, see below for names. At the Malmö festival there are e.g. dance and DJ competitions, debates, fashion shows, art installations, carousels and the like, in parks, streets and squares. Major recurring events at the festival are the crayfish platter on Stortorget and the many food stalls on Gustav Adolfs torg and Södergatan. Issues of gender equality and the environment are important to the Malmö festival, and as the only festival in Sweden, has received the award "A Greener Festival" precisely for its environmental work. The festival is free and there are no reserved seats. In 2014, the Malmö Festival celebrated its 30th anniversary.
