Nanjing is a historic city in Jiangsu Province, east-central China, with origins tracing back nearly 2,600 years to around 571 BCE when the Yue state built a castle near Yuhuatai, later developing as Jinling under Chu control.
The Nanjing Massacre, also called the Rape of Nanjing, occurred after Japanese Imperial Army troops captured Nanjing—then China's capital—on December 13, 1937, during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
